What is Brown Fused Alumina (BFA) and how is it made?

Brown Fused Alumina is a tough, sharp abrasive material produced by melting bauxite in an electric arc furnace. It is primarily composed of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) with small amounts of titanium and iron.

What industries typically use BFA?

BFA is widely used in:
Bonded & coated abrasive tools (e.g. grinding wheels, sandpaper)

How does BFA compare to White Fused Alumina or Silicon Carbide?

Versus White Fused Alumina (WFA): BFA is tougher and more durable but less pure. WFA is more suitable for precision grinding.
Versus Silicon Carbide: BFA is less brittle, better for heavy-duty grinding; SiC is sharper and better for hard metals or fast cutting.

What grit sizes of BFA are available?

We offer a wide range from F12 to F220 (for bonded abrasives) and P12 to P220 (for coated abrasives), as well as fine micro powders. Custom sizing is available on request.
